Many people mistakenly believe that back pain is a natural part of aging. That is simply not the case! As we get older, our bodies can become stiff, tight and sore. However, with proactive care, we can prevent much of this stiffness, tightness and soreness – dramatically reducing the occurrence of back pain. Whether you have struggled with back pain in the past or are worried about it occurring in the future, it’s never too late to get healthy and reduce your risk.

Chiropractic Helps Prevent Back Pain

Below, our chiropractor shares five tips to prevent back pain:

1: Practice good posture.
Slouching or slumping compresses the lumbar spine, straining the muscles and ligaments in the lower back, which causes pain. Good posture helps to maintain your spine’s natural curves, keeping your body supported and pain-free.

2: Strengthen your core.
A strong core is essential to proper posture. The good news is that there are many ways to strengthen the core that do not involve hundreds of sit-ups! Regularly practicing Pilates and yoga, for example, are two great ways to build stronger core muscles while articulating the spine and relieving lower back pain.

3: Adjust your chair.
Do you spend long hours hunched over a computer at work? Poor office ergonomics can aggravate low back pain. Reduce pressure on the lower back by adjusting your office chair so that your feet are flush on the floor and your back fully supported by the chair.

4: Support your spine at night.
Your sleeping posture could be triggering lower back pain. If you sleep on your side, place a small pillow between your legs to maintain proper spinal alignment and prevent lumbar spine compression. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees to maintain your back’s natural curvature.

5: Maintain proper spinal alignment.
Regular chiropractic adjustments are an important part of proactive wellness care and back pain prevention. Our chiropractor recommends regular adjustments to maintain proper spinal alignment and reduce the risk for back pain.
